Trump's Immigration Proposal
On Thursday afternoon, May 16, at the Rose Garden, President Donald Trump announced his immigration plan. The measure calls for replacing long-standing immigration rules with a points-based system system that would favor high-skilled, self-proficient immigrants who learn English and pass a civics exam.
Three-fourths of the immigrants would have to have a bachelor's degree and learn English.
It doesn't propose a real threat to legal immigrants who were brought to the US as children, also known as the Dreamers.
Trump says the plan would “transform America’s immigration system into the pride of our nation and the envy of the modern world.”
The plan also includes the building of Trump’s long-sought US-Mexico border wall.
“That is a wall that is desperately needed.” Trump says.
American History teacher Brendan Kenny says this plan is unnecessary and a waste of money.
“Why are we so focused on importing education and not focused on educating our own children and immigrant children?”
When asked if Kenny thinks the bill will be passed he said “I doubt it. There's not enough support for it, and most of the republicans do not agree with him, and the democrats will immediately shut it down.”
