Yoga in the Media Center
Here at Hillside, yoga and relaxation strategies were offered as part of Mental Health Month in the media center during lunch this week. Anna VanDis, a social worker and teen yoga instructor, presented the yoga class
Mental health is a huge factor in the ability to learn, grow, and develop strong skills to prepare students for the real world.
Senior Sable Woodard said, “I have never tried yoga, but I’d like to try it. School is a major stress.”
Woodard wasn’t sure she would be able to do yoga during lunch, though, because she needs to eat lunch at that time.
“I haven’t tried yoga yet, though I want to try it out. Yoga looks calming,” said Junior Sam Onuigbo, on the way to his first period American History class.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, the CDC, anxiety and depression among children ages 6-17 has increased over time. Mental health disorders can also be very detrimental to student’s physical health.
There are a few things that can help teens with some disorders. For anxiety, music and clothes that teens can feel confidant in help. For depression, being around some close friends and spending alone time and thinking things through. For stress, a warm cup of tea or coffee and warmth in general can help calm the nerves.
