Exceptional We Are!
Some people don’t know how to accept Hillside as a predominantly black high school. Outsiders might not be able to see the love, peace, care, and happiness shown here.
Friday, May 10, 2019 Hillside put together an “Inclusive Prom” for exceptional students in Durham public schools. The prom was put together by AVID teacher Ms. Katie Green. Ms. Mondry’s 1st period journalism class could not help but check it out.
Walking in you might expect the cliche -- prom girls and boys showing off their dresses, suits, and hair. But, no. It was something completely different.
Hillside students gathered in the gym surrounding prom guests as they presented themselves walking down an aisle of their peers, cheering the exceptional students on.There was dancing, food, beverages and communicating all in one. Nothing could have been more beautiful.
While there, my eyes were open to a new world. One of the biggest things that intrigued me was the dancing. And you’re probably wondering why would dancing be intriguing considering our generation does it a lot. But, no. It was the fact that everyone was dancing with confidence, laughter, and happiness. With no care in the world, dancing like there was no tomorrow. I noticed that many students joined in to dance also.
If you are ever wondering what’s going on at Hillside these days, don’t forget this story. Exceptional we stand!
