ICE Strikes Fear
ICE has been doing raids all around North Carolina. According to the News & Observer, ICE has arrested more than 230 immigrants. Durham police has announced that they’ve cut off all ties with ICE, so far seven mayors have opposed to these raids, including Durham mayor Steve Schewel.
ICE is an agency of the Homeland Security, it was created in 2003 in response to 9/11.
ICE’s website states the their main mission is to encourage homeland security and public safety through the criminal and civil enforcement of federal laws governing border control, customs, trade and immigration.
These raids are caused due to NC’s largest counties cutting ties and not cooperating with ICE. “Most of these arrests were targeted at counties where sheriffs have ended the practice of ‘ICE detainers’,” Steve Schewel wrote in a letter signed by six other mayors in surrounding counties.
The increased presence of ICE has caused fear in families from children to adults.
