How Will the Snow Days Affect Hillside High School?
“Durham Public Schools will be closed to students and staff on Monday, December 10, 2018.”
On the days of December 10th to December 12th, All Durham Public Schools were closed due to inclement weather. While snow days may have seemed like a nice, short break, schools are required to have a certain number of days or hours by the end of the year. In North Carolina, schools were required to provide at least 180 days of classes and 1,000 hours of instruction each school year, but in 2012, state lawmakers changed the requirements so that schools could have either a minimum of 185 days or 1,025 hours annually. It’s not to be celebrate as missing a few days only means they will have to be made up later, which can cut into student planned breaks.
Luckily, schools have planned in make-up days and an abundance of teacher workdays to cut through, but just how many breaks can we take before it starts cutting into student vacations? Just earlier this beginning semester, DPS was closed on various dates due to previous inclement weather, so it’s important to know just how many make-up days we’re looking at.
