WHAT’S THE STING?
The Sting is Hillside High School’s designated hub for information on what’s buzzing around Hillside. The teacher in charge of The Sting is Ms. Jaclyn Novotny who is new to journalism, but no stranger to writing and freedom of expression. Ms. Novotny shares her goals by declaring that she, “hopes that I can eventually turn the paper into a ‘Social Justice’ themed paper where we can raise awareness of issues and stories happening in our community.”
Ms. Novotny’s experience with newspaper is in progress and she hopes to learn more as she goes along, but with the help of her students and fellow faculty members she will continue to try her best. The newspaper journalism and English II admits, “To be honest, I hope that I can just learn the newspaper at first. I need the students to be patient with me this semester as I work out the organizational kinks.” Her lack of experience can be viewed as an encouragement to those who also wish to join the newspaper, but worry that they don’t fit the part.
Newspapers have a wide range of content included in their stories ranging from artistic features, such as poems and theater to breaking news. Novotny encourages her students to write what they like and doesn’t wish to censor their artistic freedom.
As some of you may or may not know, the Hillside newspaper was in effect in previous years. However, as the years progressed, the paper did not. Because of this, Novotny believed that it should be rekindled. Hillside students play a large role in keeping the newspaper going. Ms. Novotny knows for a fact that five students within her class have shown genuine interest in a career within the Communication and Journalism field. These students, such as Jiana Brown, Tahj Hall, and Elaijah Gibbs, assist with the formatting and editing of the newspaper as a whole.
If you want to find her and provide her with material, ideas, or questions about the newspaper you can come after school at 4:15 to room 105 or send her an email at Thesting@hillsidehornets.net.
